Spinners, Hemalatha star in rain-hit game as India take 2-0 lead

By Cricbuzz Staff

A disciplined bowling performance, led by the spinners, and a breezy 41 not out off only 24 deliveries by Dayalan Hemalatha led India to victory in a rain-hit game in Sylhet as the visitors took a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series.

Murshida Khatun top-scored for Bangladesh with 46 but the hosts could only post 119 after opting to bat. Bangladesh actually got off to a good start, crossing 40 in the fifth over before regular wickets hurt their progress. By the time the 11th over had been completed, they slipped to 70/5, with Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav having bagged two wickets apiece.

After a rain-break of more than 45 minutes, Bangladesh resumed their innings with no overs being lost. Khatun led them past the 100-run mark in the 16th over before Deepti struck for the second time in the innings, finishing with 2-14. Radha picked up another wicket in her final over while there were a couple of runs outs leading to the close of the innings as Bangladesh were bowled out, having managed only 22 runs in the last five overs for the loss of five wickets.

Marufa Akter dismissed Shafali Verma for a duck in the first over of the chase but Hemalatha kept the runs coming at a good rate to keep India ahead. She started with a six over midwicket off Sultana Khatun, struck fours off Marufa and Fariha Trisna before hitting a six and a four off Nahida Akter. She also cracked another four off Marufa off the second ball of the sixth over before it started raining again.

With five overs completed, a result was a surety and India were well ahead of the DLS calculations when the players came off the field. Rain eventually had the final say as India sealed a 19-run victory as per the DLS method to extend their lead in the series.

Brief scores:

Bangladesh 119 in 20 overs (Murshida Khatun 46; Radha Yadav 3-19, Deepti Sharma 2-14, Shreyanka Patil 2-24) lost to India 47/1 in 5.2 overs (Dayalan Hemalatha 41*; Marufa Akter 1-11) by 19 runs (DLS method).
