Afghanistan hand maiden World Cup callup to Ishaq, Kharoti

Afghanistan have picked Mohammad Ishaq, the 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Ishaq, who made his T20I debut this year, was named in the 15-member Afghanistan squad announced on Tuesday.

Apart from Ishaq, Karim Janat and Noor Ahmad are also notable inclusions in the side from the team that featured in the last edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Afghanistan have also picked Nangyal Kharoti, the 20-year-old left-arm spinning all-rounder, who made his international debut earlier this year.

He adds muscle to the strong spin attack that already boasts of skipper Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad. The pace attack includes Naveen-ul-Haq, Fareed Ahmad and Fazalhaq Farooq. Sediq Atal, Hazratullah Zazai, Saleem Safi have been named in the travelling reserves.

Afghanistan are set to begin their campaign on June 3, with their opening encounter against Uganda at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. They will then face New Zealand at the same venue on June 7 before heading to Trinidad to face Papua New Guinea and to Gros Islet in St Lucia to face West Indies on June 13 and 17 respectively.
